Products Description
Marine Shipboard Cable
Marine shipboard cable is built for the electrical environment inside a ship's hull - confined spaces, constant vibration, and a fire risk profile where a cable failure can't simply be isolated and walked away from. This construction is aimed at instrumentation, control, and low-voltage power circuits running through engine rooms, accommodation areas, and cable trunks on board.
Conductor and Fire Barrier
2 class 2 tinned copper conductor, with a mica tape layer wrapped underneath the insulation. The mica tape keeps the circuit functioning for a period even after the surrounding insulation has burned away - relevant for circuits that need to stay live during a fire event, such as emergency lighting or alarm circuits.
Insulation and Inner Sheath
XLPE insulation, with an SHF1 inner sheath applied before the armor layer. SHF1 is a halogen-free compound, which matters inside a ship's hull where smoke has nowhere to escape and toxic gas buildup is a real risk during a fire.
Armor
Tinned copper wire braid, rather than the wound steel wire armor used on land-based armored cable. The braid gives mechanical protection against chafing and impact in tight cable runs, and it also provides electromagnetic shielding - useful on a vessel where instrumentation and control cables often run close to high-current power cables and motors.
Outer Sheath
A second SHF1 layer over the armor, again halogen-free. Standard sheath color is red, though other colors are available on request to match a shipyard's cable identification scheme.
Rated Voltage and Temperature
AC 0.6/1kV, rated for continuous operation from -15°C to 90°C.
Standards
Manufactured to IEC 60092-353, IEC 60228, IEC 60092-360, IEC 60332-1-2, IEC 60332-3-22, IEC 60754-1~2, IEC 61034-1~2, and IEC 60331 - covering conductor construction, general fire performance, flame propagation on bundled cables, halogen acid gas emission, smoke density, and fire resistance under direct flame.
Why This Matters in Practice
IEC 60332-3-22 in particular tests how a cable behaves when bundled together with others and exposed to flame - a single cable passing a basic flame test doesn't guarantee the same result once it's run in a bundle through a cable trunk, which is the actual condition on a ship. We test to the bundled-cable standard, not just the single-cable version, before releasing a batch for a marine order.

FAQs
Q: Why braided armor instead of wound wire armor like standard land cables?
A: Braid handles the vibration and repeated flexing found on a moving vessel better than wound wire, and it doubles as EMI shielding - useful when this cable runs alongside motors or power distribution cable in the same trunk.
Q: Is the sheath color fixed, or can it be changed?
A: Red is standard, but shipyards often specify their own color-coding scheme for different circuit types. We can match whatever color is specified in your project's cable schedule.
Q: Does this cable meet fire-resistance requirements, or just flame-retardant requirements?
A: Both, but they're different things. Flame retardant (IEC 60332) means the cable won't actively spread fire. Fire resistant (IEC 60331) means the circuit keeps functioning for a defined period while actually on fire - this cable is rated to both standards, which isn't automatic for every shipboard cable on the market.
